Hi!
My name is Maddie Lee, and this is my work.
I live in the Bay Area, but I grew up in Los Angeles (which is a cooler way of saying the San Fernando Valley). If you ever find yourself at the north end of Ventura Boulevard where I lived, I recommend breakfast at Bobby's Coffee Shop and the sangak at Woodland Hills Market. At the former you will sit in a red vinyl booth and most likely look very unimpressed; but at the door of the latter, striding towards the heat of the outdoor oven and the smell of fresh-baked bread, you'll feel hopeful and new all over again.
I've always been very into writing, but for a short time as an undergrad at UC Santa Barbara I pursued other things that I didn't like nearly as much.
Then one morning, I looked up at the ceiling with fresh eyes and said, "that's that." And my roommate rolled over and said, "did you say something?" and I said "What? No, you're definitely hearing things." And then I got dressed, walked out the door, and joined a newspaper. And that was that.
This space is a collection of what came after: five years of doing what I loved (with a lot of enthusiasm and very little sleep). Of storytelling, of covering 4am sit-ins, of finding narrative threads in town hall meetings, of helping to build a student-run publication from the ground up, and of having the added opportunity to work and learn in local publications like The Santa Barbara Independent and Santa Barbara Magazine. I’ve since taken my passion and talent for writing to the startup world, leveraging content and marketing strategy to scale an early stage health tech startup from seed to 80K+ users in just one year. I’m excited to continue telling the stories of people, platforms, and products that make our stories that much better.
